When to Plant Cucumber Seeds
The best time to plant your cucumber seeds is from spring to early summer in a greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Alternatively, if conditions are warm and frost-free, you can sow directly outdoors. Choose a compact bush variety for gardens with limited space or a container garden, such as the Cucumber Spacemaster. The vining varieties can be left to spread on the ground or trained along a trellis.
How to Grow Cucumbers from Seed
Planting cucumber seeds can be done in pots or directly into the soil, depending on temperatures, 10 mm deep and 40–60 cm apart. The soil should be kept moist, but be cautious of overwatering or letting the soil dry out. Seeds should take 6–10 days to germinate.
Once they begin developing, you should water your cucumber seeds enough so that the soil is moist but not wet. You should also take care to prune any side shoots that don’t grow flowers, as this will help your plants to focus more energy on growing fruits. After sowing, your cucumbers should be ready to harvest in approximately 8-10 weeks..
