Cucumber African Horned (Kiwano)
An unusual African heirloom with fruity flavour. Kiwano is a climbing vine native to Africa bearing very unusual fruit with green thorns that mature to a bright orange-yellow. Mature fruit has jelly-like flesh with a flavour similar to a mix of banana, lime and cucumber. Great addition to salads, salsas, juices or use as garnish.
How To Grow
Sow direct in growing position in a pot, prefers a sunny spot.
Sow 2-3 seeds in a group, 10mm (½in) deep and 50cm (20in) apart, later thinning to the strongest seedlings. Keep moist. Seedlings emerge in 14-21 days.
Provide a trellis for the vine to climb, or plant the seeds next to a sturdy fence.

Bitterness can be tamed by washing the fruit well, removing the seeds, marinating in salt for at least ½ hour before cooking, squeezing the juice out or boiling cut pieces in a water & lemon solution.
