How To Grow
PLANT
- In colder climates, chitting potatoes can give you a head start. Place them in trays or old egg cartons with eyes facing up, and keep them in a cool, bright place until they develop thick, sturdy shoots.
- Potatoes can be planted whole or cut into sections with at least two eyes each. Allow cut sections to air dry for a day before planting.
- Prepare soil to be weed-free, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. You can plant directly in the ground or use a potato grow bag.
GROW
- Once the soil warms, new shoots should appear within 2-3 weeks.
- When shoots reach 15 cm tall, mound straw and soil over them, leaving just the tops exposed. This promotes the formation of new tubers.
- Continue mounding as the shoots grow until the mounds reach 30 cm tall and the foliage covers the soil surface.
CARE
- To harvest young potatoes, gently dig around the base of the plant to check their size. For mature potatoes, wait until the vines begin to die.
- Remove excess soil from freshly harvested potatoes, then lay them out in a cool, dim room covered with cloth or towels to block out sunlight.
- Cure potatoes for 7-10 days; this will dry the skins, heal small wounds, and thicken the skins for better storage.
- Once cured, store potatoes in a cool, dry, and dark place.
