How To Grow
PLANT
- Prepare soil to be weed-free, well-draining, and rich in organic matter for the best flowers. The soil will also tolerate poorer conditions.
- Plant with the pointy end of the bulb facing up and the neck or top portion of the bulb above the soil surface.
- Water the soil well at planting.
- Plant immediately if growing outdoors. If timing flowers for Christmas, place the bulb in the crisper and plant 5 weeks before you need the flowers.
GROW
- Natural rainfall is usually sufficient, but water if the soil becomes very dry, especially during flowering. Avoid watering the bulb’s neck to prevent rotting.
- Feed the plants when buds appear for the best floral display.
CARE
- For the longest vase life, cut flowers when buds are swollen but not yet open. Be cautious of the irritating sap.
- At the end of the season, remove spent flower heads and allow the foliage to yellow so that energy is reabsorbed into the bulb.
- Bulbs are best left in the ground.
- Crowded clumps can be lifted when dormant and divided.
