Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkins are easy-to-grow plants that boldly ripen with autumnal shades of orange and green. A vegetable seed that grows into a range of shapes and shades, pumpkins can grow quite large, filling out any vegetable patch. As an ideal companion plant for beans, sweet corn and climbing beans, pumpkin seeds are the perfect addition to any blossoming kitchen garden.

Our selection of pumpkin seeds thrives when planted in the spring and summer. Give them plenty of sunshine, then harvest once the vines die off and the stalks are dry. Be sure to leave a small piece of stalk attached to the fruit to prevent dampness from causing rot, then carve it up and enjoy.

When Do You Plant Pumpkin Seeds?

Pumpkin can be planted in the garden during springtime, ideally around September. For pumpkin seeds to grow, plant them in seed-raising trays or pots before carefully transferring them to a vegetable patch once true leaves have formed, or sow direct if the soil is warm and frost-free. Allow between 70 and 120 days from seed to harvest.

Growing Pumpkin Seeds

The beauty of pumpkin seeds is that they can grow into large, wonderful vegetables without a great deal of maintenance. For best results, sow the seeds between 2 and 2.5cm deep and water them regularly. Before transferring to the garden, pumpkin seeds can be moved onto a windowsill. This ensures that they get a clear view of the sun to flourish.

Once they have been transferred to a vegetable patch, they will be able to withstand cooler temperatures (as long as there is no frost). Space seeds at least 1 metre apart from one another, forming a shallow depression wide enough for the seedling to capture moisture.
