When to Sow Beetroot Seeds
As easy-to-grow plants, beetroot seeds can be planted almost any time of the year. All you need to do is avoid the months of frost in your area as well as mid-summer, as beetroot doesn’t germinate well in these weather extremes. Be sure to sow your beetroot seeds in succession to ensure a steady supply.
How to Grow Beetroot Seeds
Sow your beetroot seeds in a full sun spot in your garden. They aren’t particular when it comes to soil pH, though they do well in slightly acidic to neutral soil. Dig out any stones from your soil and add some well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting beetroot seeds.
Sow your seeds around 1.5-2cm (½-1 inch) deep and space them 10cm (4in) apart. As beetroot seeds are clusters of seeds, you may need to thin them out as they begin to germinate. Water them so that the soil is moist, but not waterlogged, and your seeds should germinate within one or two weeks.
Add a layer of well-rotted manure or garden compost around your beetroot seedlings as they grow to suppress weeds. Feed your plants with a balanced fertiliser, and keep an eye out for pests such as aphids and snails.
After around 4-6 weeks, you can harvest your beetroot plants for baby beetroot. For tennis ball-sized roots, harvest your plants in around 10-12 weeks. You can eat all parts of beetroots, with their leaves being a great addition to salads.
What Companion Plants to Plant with Beetroot Seeds?
Companion planting is a method of growing other types of plants alongside each other so that they can help each other to grow. There are several plants that are great for planting alongside beetroot in this way.
For example, growing bush bean seeds will provide nitrogen to your beetroot plants. As they’re both compact plants, they won’t take up as much space as well. To optimise space, you can sow lettuce seeds alongside beetroot, as their shallow roots mean they won’t compete for nutrients where your beetroots’ deep roots grow to. Growing marigold seeds is also a good idea, as these can repel pests that can attack your beetroots.
