These climbing plants produce masses of grape size fruit that resemble tiny watermelons and have a fresh flavour, like cucumber with a twist of citrus. Native to Mexico and Central America these perennial plants are very drought tolerant and easy to grow. Staking recommended.

How To Grow

Sow 3-4 seeds in a group, 5mm (1/4in) deep, later thinning to the strongest two seedlings. Keep moist. Seedlings emerge in 14-21 days.Sow in rows 60cm (2ft) apart. To encourage growth of side shoots, pinch out growing tips at 5-6 leaf stage. Harvest: 12-14 weeks from sowing.

Cucamelon Salad

Cucamelon Salad

Ingredients

  • 2 cup cucamelons
  • 1 cup red cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup yellow cherry tomatoes
  • 2 cup grapes
  • 12 fresh basil leaves
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Cut tomatoes, cucamelons and grapes in half and combine in a serving bowl. Roughly chop the basil and add to the bowl.
  2. In a jar combine the lemon juice, olive oil and salt and shake well.
  3. Just before serving, pour dressing over the cucamelons and lightly toss.
