When to plant: Late Autumn and Winter
How to grow: Sow thinly, 6mm (quarter-inch) deep, in rows. Cover with fine soil or compost and keep moist. Thin seedlings early to 2cm (1in) and later to 10cm (4in). Allow 30cm (1ft) between rows. Prepare the soil well by adding organic material and a pre-planting fertiliser. Harvest: When tops are dry and fall over
