Nothing Beats Freshly Picked Salads and Herbs!Growing your own fresh salad leaves and herbs is very rewarding and there's no better addition to a fresh salad or pasta dish than a sprig of basil or coriander picked straight from your own patch. With Mr Fothergill's new Mini Vegetable and Mini Herb Growing Kits, you can now combine the ease of pre-packaged veggies with the joy of harvesting from your own backyard. And you don't even have to find your way to the herb plot in the dark! The Mini Vegetable Garden offers high quality seed-raising mix (good quality mix is really important), five different types of lettuce to provide variety in taste, colour and texture, three growing labels do you'll know what you've planted, and a durable growing box with a drip tray. The Mini Herb Garden provides Chives, Coriander and Basil seeds for use in pastas, Asian dishes, Mexican food and soups. Add a fresh snip of Coriander to your next curry for the freshest, most piquant flavour. You also get high quality seed-raising mix, three plant labels, three packets of seeds and the growing box and drip tray. Where Can I Buy These Kits? These kits are now on sale at Bunnings hardware, Flower Power nurseries, and all good garden centres from $19.95. Is There Any Way I Can Store Any Excess Produce? For best results, we suggest you use the leaves fresh, however the herbs can be dried on a sunny windowsill and then rubbed over your favourite foods as you cook. You can harvest whole leaves or stems and hang them upside down to dry, where they will then store for as long as you need. Is There Anything Special They Need To Grow Successfully? We recommend you apply a liquid fertiliser like Seasol or other soluble fertiliser after about two to three weeks to ensure the young plants are kept well-fed. Because the young seedlings grow so quickly and are so fresh and lush, you should take care to keep pests like snails, slugs and even birds away with appropriate, environmentally safe deterrents. All these varieties can be harvested as soon as you feel they are large enough, and you can sow more crops into the seed-raising mix for up to 12 months.
