Vivid, bright scarlet-red 'brushes' adorn this attractive and compact shrub, which is an iconic plant well-recognised in Australia and increasingly in gardens throughout the world. Easy to grow, hardy and adaptable, the shrubs provide a haven for wildlife and birds.

We recommend the use of Wildflower Seed Starter Granules for improved germination rates and speed. These granules provide chemicals normally found in bushfire smoke that stimulate native seed germination.

When to plant: All year round except in hottest or coldest weather.
How to grow: Sow in warm areas anytime. In frost prone areas when danger of frost is over. Fill small pots with moist sandy soil and compress. Sow several seeds in each pot, do not cover with soil. Place pots in a shallow container, pour in enough water to submerge the lower third of the pot. Top up as required. Cover pots with clear polythene – remove when germination starts. Place in warm shady position to germinate fully. When large enough to handle thin out to 3 strongest seedlings and at 5cm (2in) high thin to best seedling and remove pot from water container. Plant out when 10cm (4in) high. Water regularly until established. Prune after flowering to improve shape and restrict height. Use occasional light applications of organic fertilizer.

Hand pollinate pumpkins, melons, zucchinis and cucumbers to ensure good fruit set. Simply find the flowers that have a small fruit underneath (the female flowers) them, then find the flowers that don't have the small fruit (male flowers) and transfer the pollen to the female flowers.
